Before the legend, before the icon, there was a teenager named Clark Kent. Clark doesn't wear glasses, there's no suit and he can't fly. Between the boy he thought he was and the man he is destined to become are the stories of Smallville. Someday, he'll master his powers and understand his true calling.
Even superheroes had to start somewhere, and in Superman's case, it seems that he wasn't always so dauntless. He actually started out as an angst driven teenager from a town called Smallville. Brought to Earth in a meteor shower, Clark is trying to find his niche in this world, often wishing he could exchange his uniqueness for some sense of normalcy in his life.
At the moment, the future superhero seems more comfortable dealing with college, tractors, and chores involving bales of hay than his extraordinary gifts. His stance for "Truth, Justice and? Some other stuff" is just one example of his uncertainty as he struggles to understand his purpose in a world where there are no others like him.
While his purpose may seem distant and unknown to him, any indication of doubt and sadness is quickly thrown aside when someone is in need of help. It is in these moments of selflessness that we see him for who he is and who he will become: Hero. Champion. Legend.
Lana Lang
(Season 1 - Present)
The soft-spoken former girl next door, Lana is a gentle person with a fierce determination which becomes apparent in times of extreme duress. She is a caring individual, with a desire to help those who are in need. Despite being a very talented person, she finds no delight in her accomplishments, but aims to do ever more.
She lost her parents in the meteor shower that brought Clark to Earth, and while this loss has often weighed heavily on her, it also drives her for greater things in life. Her greatest attribute is her quiet strength which also lends to her compassion. This compassion tends to have her believe the best in people, even those who don't deserve it.
As Clark's first love, she has helped him through many situations, but her desire for complete honesty from Clark has led to numerous struggles for the couple. Because of the lack of trust between the two, Lana moves past Clark and begins a new relationship with Lex. This new relationship has created an ever growing rift as Lana now stands at the side of a man who will become Clark's greatest enemy.
Lex Luthor
(Season 1 - Present)
In the perfect example of irony, Superman's greatest adversary started out as one of Clark's greatest friends. Determined to step out of his father's shadow, Lex has a thirst for power which seems unquenchable. This quest for power drives him daily, as he feels that being just a mere man is not enough.
His charm is undeniable, his wit is incontestable, and his lies are nearly indecipherable from the truth. Lex is not one to sit idly by and let anything slip from his grasp, and it is this "win at all costs" mentality that separates him from Clark. The former friendship has quickly unraveled recently, since Lex and Lana started a relationship. Despite this, their friendship will indeed be remembered as "the stuff of legends."
While his methods might seem extreme, he strives to protect his loved ones, often alienating himself in the process. He has rarely been in a situation that he could not control but as he continues his quest for knowledge and power, he slowly descends into darkness.
Chloe Sullivan
(Season 1 - Present)
Other than the almost superhuman ability to find trouble, Chloe brings something new to the table in regards to her relationship with Clark. One of the limited few to know about Clark's secret, she gives him something no one else can at this time; freedom to be himself.
She has a great interest in the effects of the meteor showers in Smallville, and other paranormal events. Her natural curiosity and amiable personality helps her to find her next big story with little effort. Furthermore, her intelligence, many contacts and the knack for finding hidden information has helped Clark through countless problems.
Along with these journalistic tendencies, she is also a charitable person, often going above and beyond the call of duty to help her friends. There are moments where her instinctive reporting habits conflict with her desire to be Clark's friend. It is in these moments that her character shines, as she keeps her greatest story, and her true love hidden, for the sake of their friendship.
Martha Kent
(Season 1 - Present)
After the fateful meteor shower, Martha and Jonathan came across a young child in the field. Unable to have children of her own, she immediately fell in love with the boy. Naming the child Clark, Martha raised him as her own. Through the years she has cared for him, and encouraged him to accept and use his gifts for good.
A very intelligent and often business-minded woman, Martha is incredibly generous, and always accepting. Never quick to judge, even to those are less than honest with her, she is ready with sage advice, even for the most powerful of men.
After recently losing her husband, she struggles to continue his legacy while guiding Clark towards his destiny. It is her love for life and her mora guidance that has helped to nurture the benevolence in the Man of Steel. It seems that Superman was not just born with the ideals of Truth, and Justice in him; rather it was instilled in him by his earthly mother.
Lionel Luthor
(Season 1 - Present)
A shrewd man whose business savvy is matched only by his taste for expensive alcohol, Lionel is a calculating man who is very adept at making enemies. However, his devious mind is truly shown in his ability to always be two steps ahead of these enemies.
While his intelligence isn't questioned, his motives have been as he continually crossed lines that would be considered morally ambiguous. Often feeling that he is above the law because he is a "Luthor," he attempts to play the puppet master with the lives of those around him. Because of this arrogant attitude, his help is often not trusted and even his kindest words are taken with cynicism. While he might have always been a successful businessman, his parenting skills had been somewhat lacking. He frequently put Lex in situations that were illegal, immoral, or dangerous while making the claim that he did it to strengthen his son's character. This cavalier behavior tore apart what remained of an already fragile relationship.
Recent events have shown that Lionel has changed his stripes, as he has proven time and again to be an ally to Clark. However, the change hasn't been accepted by his son, who still feels that he is not a man to be trusted.
Lois Lane
(Season 4 - Present)
A spirited college student, Lois first came to town after the apparent death of her cousin Chloe. From their first encounter, Lois leaves a lasting impression on Clark; one that isn't too appealing to him at the moment; super-speed isn't in her repertoire, but it seems that quick insults are.
With a sharp mind, and an even sharper tongue, Lois has a natural ability to leave Clark in stunned silence. While their relationship often seems like sibling rivalry, the respect they have for each other is undeniable. At this time, the future wife of Superman isn't interested in any form of romantic liaisons with whom she so affectionately refers to as "Smallville."
Not as open to sharing her feelings like others, she can often give the impression of being somewhat callous. However, she shows her affection for others through actions rather than words. Although at this stage, Clark thinks of her as being "bossy," it is her charm along with her resoluteness that intrigues him, and will draw them together in the future.
Jonathan Kent
(Season 1 - Season 5)
The epitome of a red-blooded American, Jonathan was the father of Clark and husband of Martha. An intelligent man, he surprisingly seemed to be most at peace when involved with some chore around the farm. This simplified outlook on life created a man who was modest, and honest.
Strongly opinionated, Jonathan was not afraid to share his view. At times, his view seemed to involve his fists, but it was this headstrong approach at life that made him a truly great man. With an undying love for his family, he was willing to risk his life without a second thought. This courage was seen in the numerous times that he jumped into dangerous situations to protect his loved ones.
Jonathan was also interested in protecting his community. It was this desire to help others that led him to run for, and win a Senate seat. However, in what seemed like a cruel twist of fate, he was not able to enjoy his victory for long, as his heart ceased to beat and he died in the arms of his wife and child. That night, Clark lost his greatest hero but his father?s integrity and unfaltering strength would live on, in the Man of Steel.
Jason Teague
(Season 4)
During her brief stay in Paris, Lana happened to meet a young American due to her involvement in an accident. Jason?s endearing qualities along with his charm led to Lana falling in love with him, and a romantic relationship began. He even followed Lana back to Smallville, and decided to coach football for the Crows.
He later became involved in research that would be considered questionable at best, and he began to develop, much like everyone else in Smallville, the ability to keep secrets. Over time, his mother?s influence also affected him, and his personality changed from that of a carefree and droll person to one who was obsessed with finding the Kryptonian stones.
His search for the stones led him to the home of the Kent?s, where he attempted to hold Jonathan and Martha hostage. His plan was thwarted however due to the sudden onslaught from the second meteor shower; he was not fortunate enough to survive.
Pete Ross
(Season 1 - Season 3)
A friend of Clark?s from early childhood, Pete was a very outgoing person who was always open to making new friends. Not wanting to merely watch from the sidelines, he was involved in many activities at school. With his cheery disposition, he was also a contrasting personality to the often brooding Clark.
Originally feeling betrayed when finding out about Clark?s origins, he eventually became one of his greatest allies. With the knowledge of Clark?s secrets, he was better able to cover for Clark?s inexplicable disappearances and bizarre events which seemed to surround his friend.
However, this same knowledge along with the pressure of keeping Clark safe from meddlesome strangers became too heavy a burden for him to carry. Feeling that he might slip and unintentionally bring attention to Clark, he chose to leave town with his mother. His current whereabouts are unknown but he is presumed to be still living in Wichita, Kansas.
Whitney Fordman
(Season 1)
Often referred to as Lana?s jock boyfriend, Whitney was the one student in school who seemed to have everything that Clark wanted: The starting quarterback position, the popularity, and the girl.
He proved to be a major obstacle for Clark, constantly hindering any of his attempts at getting closer to Lana. In fact, Clark and Whitney?s relationship was anything but amicable as he had Clark strung up as the scarecrow in a corn field when he found out about Clark?s feelings for Lana. While his actions at the time seemed callous, he later proved to be a considerate person.
After the death of his father, Whitney felt that he had to find some purpose in his life, and he found it in the Armed Forces. After deciding to join the U.S. Marines, he promised to return to Lana and continue their relationship. It was a promise that he was not able to keep when he died in the line of duty.
